Destination: New York, New York

Photo creds: John St. John

It’s usually around this time of year that I start preparing for a spring trip. While it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to get away to anywhere exceptionally exotic this year, I have to say that I’ve had New York City on the brain a lot lately. All of the photos pouring in from Fashion Week have me longing for the Big Apple, and seriously considering making a quick trip up in late March.

There are endless resources to consult when planning a trip to the city that never sleeps. However, my best advice for NYC is just to go where the city takes you. Get an unlimited-ride MetroCard, hop a train, find your favorite neighborhood in your favorite borough, and just wander. The beautiful thing about New York City, besides accessibility, is that there is truly a place for everyone.

But if you’re the type that likes to have an itinerary, here is some inspiration.

FathomAway.com has one of the most comprehensive online guides I’ve ever seen; itineraries for everything from day trips to first-time visits, as well as tips on getting around.

For the coffee addicts like myself, 14 coffee shops to try.

I’ve stumbled upon a few of these inadvertently.

Things NOT to do, and alternatives to gimmicky tourist traps. (Spoiler alert: Avoid Times Square at all costs; it’s not worth it.)

A few things to keep in mind when in the city, with illustrations.

When in doubt, consult Vogue.

Finally, if New York Magazine doesn’t know the city, who does?

I’m sure at some point I’ll put together a feather + fir City Guide to New York City (maybe even one for each borough) but until then, I’ve listed a few of my favorite spots in the concrete jungle below:

Earl’s Beer and Cheese on 97th and Park Ave.

Oiji in East Village (read how the NYT feels about their honey butter chips here).

A classic slice at John’s.

Buy ALL the things at Levain.

The Met is always a good idea.

The New Museum in Nolita.

A little piece of North Carolina in SoHo.

Who knows when I’ll be able to get back , but in the mean time I’ll just continue to swoon over Marchesa and NY street style.
